Roofing is work for people who feel comfortable at height and understand that a roof does not forgive careless work. There is no “almost straight”, “kind of sealed”, or “we’ll fix it later”. If there is a mistake, rain, wind, or the first winter will show it quickly.
In Europe, roofers are needed on new buildings, old house renovations, industrial sites, warehouses, private homes, and commercial buildings. The work may be seasonal or long-term, depending on the country, weather, project type, and the worker’s experience.
Roofing work can be very different. One worker installs tiles. Another works with metal, membranes, bitumen materials, or flat roofs. Some projects involve replacing the roof of a private house, while others require maintenance on a large warehouse or industrial building.
Typical roofer duties include:
This is technical work. And physical work too. You need to carry materials, move on slopes, work with a helmet, safety harness, scaffolding, or lifts. Not much romance here. A lot of responsibility.
A roofer job in Europe can suit someone with experience in construction, installation, or renovation, but the best option is real roofing experience. Employers look at which materials the candidate has worked with, whether they can use tools, and whether they understand safety rules for working at height.
Experience with roof tiles, standing seam roofing, flat roofs, membranes, gutter systems, insulation, or repair of old coverings is an advantage. Physical stamina, accuracy, and no fear of heights are also important.
Language requirements depend on the work format. In a crew, basic English or simple commands in the local language may be enough. But if the worker is more independent, travels between sites, or communicates with customers, communication becomes more important.
Roofer pay in Europe depends on the material, experience, country, season, and risk level. For entry-level or simpler jobs, rates may be around 11-15 euros per hour. Experienced roofers working with tiles, flat roofs, membranes, complex details, or commercial projects may earn 16-25 euros per hour or more.
Monthly income often comes to around 1900-3000 euros net. On complex projects, with many hours, piece-rate pay, or in-demand skills, earnings may be higher. But conditions matter: housing, transport, insurance, tools, workwear, hours, and overtime pay.
There is one more point — weather. Roofing depends on the season more than many other construction trades. During active building periods, there may be more hours. In winter, some projects shift to repairs, maintenance, or indoor preparation work.
Before applying, clarify what type of roof you will work with: pitched, flat, industrial, private house, tile, metal, membrane, bitumen, or leak repair. These are different tasks. And different pay levels.
In your CV, be specific: which materials you installed, whether you worked at height, whether you have experience with gutters, insulation, waterproofing, standing seam roofing, tiles, or membranes. For roofers, these details are very important. They show immediately whether the candidate simply worked in construction or actually understands roofing.
